Service

Elson Garrett was born in Huntington and moved back to the area at age 11 after spending his early childhood in Alabama. A 1973 graduate of Huntington High School, Elson’s early work experiences included jobs as a janitor, lawn care provider, and paperboy, which laid the foundation for his future career.
Elson initially worked at ACF and pursued a sewing certificate at Tri-State OIC, aiming for a career in fashion design. However, he shifted focus and found work at Huntington State Hospital, then as a co-op with the Huntington Corps of Engineers, where he gained experience in drafting and photography. His breakthrough came when he took a position as a service manager at Aaron Products, where he worked for over eight years.
In 1978, Elson began his electrical career with IBEW, completing a three-year apprenticeship with Bloomberg Electric and Prichard Electric, and earned an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. His career spanned various roles with companies like Dixon Electric, Ashland Oil, Marathon Oil, and the Huntington Housing Authority. A licensed journeyman, Elson specialized in lighting and circuitry and operated a range of equipment.
After retiring in 2012, Elson continues to be active, holding licenses in KY, WV, GA, and NC. He dedicates his time to volunteering at the A. D. Lewis Center and supports various community organizations, including the American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus, and the Huntington Elks. Notably, he was the first Black member admitted to the Elks in 2007 and values their scholarship programs for students. Elson also contributes to Marshall University’s Black Alumni events, notably frying fish a popular dish at alumni gatherings.
Elson’s enduring commitment to his community and his professional expertise reflect a life dedicated to service and improvement. He is ready to continue traveling and helping others as part of his mission to make a positive impact.
