Clarence Martin
“Clarence Martin is a lifelong resident of Huntington, WV. He was baptized at St. Peter Claver Church and later attended school there. After leaving St. Peter Claver Elementary school, he attended Oley Jr, High School and graduated from Huntington High School. During his formative years he worked with father in his business, Martin Transfer Company, a moving and storage company. He worked with his father for over 40 years.
Clarence worked for Verizon from 1972 until his retirement in 2006, starting as a custodial engineer and ending his career as a cable splicer and trouble shooter. Clarence coached youth football with the Lincoln-Oley League. He not only coached but was on the Executive Board for five years. He became a licensed basketball and football official. He was one of the lead officials of the Scott Community Summer League when it was started by Pete Goodson, to give the youth and adults in the community something and somewhere to go in the summer. He went on to call games at the junior high and high school levels, talking to our kids about the importance of school and getting the grades needed to get into college or to get a job. He is a dedicated member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and serves as usher and hospitality services and was a member of the team that took on the task of the $90,000 church renovations, this past summer. When Councilwoman Clements took on the task of painting the Hal Greer Underpass several years ago, he was there painting along with other community members. He is a member of the Fairfield West Neighborhood Association and helped this past summer with the organization’s spring cleanup and their Back to School Bash. He has and will always help with projects that will better our community.”
