Earl W. McDowell

Head Chef / VA Hospital

Many knew him as Mr. McDowell, Mr. Earl, or just “Mac”. His work ethic, drive, and perseverance inspiredĀ all those around him. When he gave of himself, it was straight from the heart with his generosity felt by all who knew him.

Mr. Earl had a special gift-his hands. He used those hands to tend to his garden which provided food not only for his family, but also for his neighbors. He usedĀ another gift while serving in in the US Navy during World WarĀ II. During that time, he served as a crane operator. He was also assigned to KP Duty which is where he honed his skills as an excellent cook. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he was hired by The Veterans Hospital Medical CenterĀ in Huntington as the head cook. He was subsequently promoted to an administrative position in the same department.

After 33 years of employment, he retired. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Young Chapel A.M.E. Church.Ā After retirement, he continued to live life to the fullest even while on dialysis, until his passing on November 25, 1997.
