William C. Whittenburg Jr.

William C. Whittenburg Jr. was a professional boxer who boxed and trained alongside some of the most legendary boxers of all-time.

He was one of the first southpaw Black boxers from West Virginia to turn professional. He boxed throughout the United States, Africa, Europe and Canada. He trained alongside the great Sugar Ray Robinson at Gleason’s Gym in New York.

After retiring from professional boxing, Whittenburg trained boxers at a local VFW in Huntington and at the old YMCA. He also cooked and bought food for kids at the A.D. Lewis Community Center. He also has been known to mow lawns for his elderly neighbors as a kind gesture.
