William Morton attended Meadows Elementary School and Cammack Junior High before moving with his family to Denver, Colorado, where he graduated from East High School. He attended Georgetown University and graduated with a degree in political science. This background led him to a career as an administrative assistant to The Rev. Jesse Jackson, which subsequently led to a career with Ron Brown, U.S. Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton Administration. Morton’s life ended tragically in a plane crash while traveling with Secretary Brown to Croatia in 1996. He was 35.

Morton’s many achievements included becoming a commissioned cadet colonel of the Junior ROTC in Denver; leader in American Boys State; and recipient of the Mayor’s Certificate for his service to the community of Denver as a member of the Mayor’s Commission on Youth. The Explorer Academy school library in Huntington is named in his honor.
