O.J. Mayo

O.J. Mayo grew up in Huntington and started playing basketball in the 7th grade. He attended Rose Hill Christian School in Ashland, Kentucky. He moved to suburban Cincinnati to live with club team coach Dwaine Barnes and enrolled at North College Hill High School in North College Hill, Ohio.

He returned to Huntington and enrolled at Huntington High School for the 2006-2007 school year. During that year for the Highlanders, Mayo led the state in scoring at 28.4 points per game. He and teammate Patrick Patterson led the Highlanders to their third consecutive Class AAA basketball title. The 2006-07 team was regarded as one of the most dominant high school basketball programs in West Virginia history. The Highlanders played home games at Veterans Memorial Field House and at the Cam Henderson Center to accommodate large crowds.

After graduating from Huntington High, Mayo enrolled at the University of Southern California and played one year for the Trojans before entering the 2008 NBA Draft. He was in the first round as the third overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves but was later traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He went on to play four seasons for the Grizzlies, making the NBA All-Rookie team his first season. Mayo also played for the Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks during his eight-year NBA career.

For the past six years, Mayo has played overseas in Taiwan, China and Russia.
