Effie Carter-Grear

Educator

Effie Carter-Grear was born in Huntington and graduated from Douglass High School. She continued her education at West Virginia State College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music. She also earned a master’s degree in 1955 from Ohio State University and earned her doctorate degree in education in 1976.

Carter-Grear taught at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical High School in Tallahassee from 1948-51 and Smith-Brown High School from 1951-56. She was band director at Lake Shore High School in Belle Glade, Florida, from 1956-60, was dean of girls at the high school from 1960-66 and served as assistant principal from 1966-70.

She received numerous awards and was a member of many organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She is the author of Up from the Muck, which recounts true stories of the lives of residents and several former students from Belle Glade, Florida.
