Callie J. Barnett

Community Activist

Callie J. Barnett was a community activist in Huntington and the Fairfield community.

She grew up in Ohio and North Carolina but moved to Huntington when her husband, Carter Barnett, was hired as the second principal of Douglass High School. Even though Carter Barnett built a house for the family, Callie Barnett sent her children to Granville, Ohio, to live with her mother and attend school there.

Callie Barnett gave several interviews during her lifetime. Most included recollections of Huntington, First Baptist Church and Douglass and Barnett schools.

She was an expert seamstress and was known for the quilts she produced. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church.

She was 109 years old when she died.
