Leroy Nicholson
Leroy Nicholson grew up in Warrenton, North Carolina, and served in the Army during the Korean War.
When he left the Army, he attended North Carolina A&T University and earned an associate’s degree in tailoring, dry cleaning and business. He came to Huntington in June 1954, and worked at George H. Wright Men’s Store for six months and Robert Hall Men’s Store for seven years. He moved on to Sears, working as a master tailor for more than 30 years. Even though he is retired, he still is known to do some tailoring.
He has served as president of the J.W. Scott Community Center, the Owls Club and the Revelers Club. He is president of the Calvary Baptist Church Usher Board and served as past president of the board for Barnett Child Care Center.
Since he retired, Nicholson has spent at least three days a week at the Marie Redd Senior Life Enrichment Center, where he enjoys playing dominoes and bingo.
Nicholson and his family were one of the first families to buy a house on 11th Avenue, and he later built the house he still lives in on 10th Avenue. In the summer of 2021, Nicholson was depicted with several other prominent Black community leaders in a mural painted on the Unlimited Future building on 8th Avenue.
