Maurice Cooley
Maurice Cooley came to Huntington in 1966 to attend Marshall University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1970. He served in the military from 1970-73. He was employed in the U.S. Army Hospital to conduct outpatient evaluations on active-duty personnel.
Upon his release from the military, he returned to Marshall to earn a master’s degree in Counseling. His professional experience is extensive. He was employed at Goodwill Industries of the KYOVA Area. There, he served as counselor of the Sheltered Workshop Rehabilitation. He also was employed at Prestera Center for Mental Health Services, Inc., where he served as outpatient clinician; director of marketing and corporate development; progress director of psychiatric rehabilitation and community support services; and as clinical supervisor of psychiatric emergency and diagnostic services.
At Marshall University, Cooley served as director of Marshall University Chancellor’s Scholars Program; was founder/director of the Society of Black Scholars; was associate vice president of the Office of Intercultural Affairs; was vice president/dean of Intercultural and Student Affairs, a position he held until his retirement in 2022.
